In many cities the use of video cameras in public places is being increased in order to reduce crimes, but some people believe that these measures restrict our individual freedom. Do the benefits of increased security outweigh the drawbacks?

Some people believe that surveillance cameras installed in public spaces can help decrease the crime rate, while others think that it only regulates individual liberty. While it is sometimes true that surveillance cameras can make people feel uncomfortable and harassed, my view is that using these kinds of safety devices is more beneficial for the sake of the public.

On one hand, security cameras in public places bring about negative effects in various ways.

To begin with, the installation of public surveillance devices is an invasion of pravacy since they can observe everything around the clock. When you are walking down the street, driving in your car, or hanging out with your friends, you can be monitored and this creates a complete picture of your private life, which you do not want others even the government to know.

Another controversy worth mentioning is that the effectiveness of public surveillance cameras in reducing the crime rate has not been proved. Despite the fact that there are a lot of security devices installed in public venues, we often hear horrifying news committed by criminals. In addition, som extreme law offenders are not deterred by the fact that there is a camera in place.

On the other hand, there is another line of thought that installing more video surveillance equipment is more beneficial for people and for public safety.

First off, cameras being put up in public places can be used as a way to keep an eye out for any crimes that are being committed, and it increases public safety. Crimes can be deterred even before they begin in some cases. If a suspicious individual or dangerous item are seen in an area, the appropriate authorities can be contacted to manage the situation before any damage is done as a precautionary measure.

Apart from that, if a crime is committed in a public space where a security camera has been set up, the chances of catching the criminal are much higher. If a person is caught on camera committing a crime, posters can be created by using the recorded images which can also be aired on television to help spread the word about the criminal.

In conclusion, I understand why a lot of people are concerned about the presence security equipment in communal paces, however, I still believe that the benefits we gain from this form of public security outweigh the disadvantages.
